The , , and are urging the public to exercise increased caution around water this June bank holiday weekend.

The appeal comes after a 10% rise in drownings this year compared to the same period in 2024.

With large numbers expected at beaches, lakes, and rivers, authorities are reminding everyone to prioritise safety and enjoy the long weekend responsibly.

Water Safety Tips:

  • Check weather and tide forecasts before heading out. If walking along the shore, stay alert for incoming tides.
  • Be cautious of rip currents—they can sweep even strong swimmers out to sea.
  • Never swim alone; always swim with others.
  • Stay within your depth at all times.
  • Wear a lifejacket or buoyancy aid when on the water.
  • Inform someone onshore of your plans and expected return time.

, Head of Operations at the Irish Coast Guard, emphasised the seriousness of the situation:

“In May 2025 alone, drownings have doubled compared to the same time last year, causing devastating loss to families nationwide. As the June bank holiday marks the start of summer for many, we urge everyone to plan carefully and follow safety guidelines.”
