Bangor RNLI volunteers launched on Thursday night to assist a sailor whose yacht had lost all power on the northern shore of Belfast Lough at Carrickfergus harbour.

At 9.14pm Belfast Coastguard requested the Bangor lifeboat after reports of a man in difficulty onboard a 22ft yacht. The inshore lifeboat Ruby Robinson, with a crew of four, launched at 9.25pm and made best speed to the harbour.

On arrival the crew located the yacht at anchor in the north-east corner of the harbour. The sailor was found to be safe and well. With the tide rising, helm James Gillespie decided it would be safer to tow the vessel into deeper water before bringing it alongside the Marine Projects pontoon.

At the pontoon the yacht was met by the Portmuck Coastguard Rescue Team, who assisted with berthing. The lifeboat returned to Bangor by 10.50pm where it was refuelled, washed and made ready for service.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Gillespie reminded sailors of the importance of preparation. “Always have a means for calling and signalling for help and ensure you know how to use it. Learn how to start, run and maintain your engine. Always carry tools and spares,” he said.
