The Marine Institute is marking Science Week 2025 throughout November with a programme highlighting careers that support ocean research and Ireland’s marine environment and blue economy.
The campaign, titled ‘Oceans of Careers’, is aligned with the national theme “Then. Today. Tomorrow” and explores how marine science has developed over time. It also highlights the skilled professionals at the Marine Institute who are helping to keep Ireland at the forefront of ocean research.
Dr Rick Officer, CEO of the Marine Institute, said marine science in Ireland relies on people with diverse skills working together. “Our staff, whether in laboratories, at sea on research vessels or involved in research projects, play a vital role in conserving marine ecosystems, supporting fishing industries, protecting food safety and promoting the sustainable development of Ireland’s marine environment,” he said.
Throughout November, the Institute will focus on different aspects of marine science work. The first week highlights sustainable seas and protecting resources, showing work with fishing communities, fish population assessments and sustainable seaweed farming.
The second week explores climate research, including ocean monitoring, research vessel operations and computer modelling to predict environmental changes.
The third week focuses on safe seafood and quality assurance, with laboratory testing of shellfish and monitoring of harmful algal blooms. The final week looks at leadership and future careers, including project management, European partnerships and international collaborations.

The series also explores the education pathways and career opportunities available in marine science. Professionals featured come from backgrounds in marine biology, chemistry, geography and engineering. The Institute emphasises that ocean science also requires data analysts, technicians, community liaisons and project managers.
Dr Officer said the series aims to inspire young people to consider careers in Ireland’s marine sector. He added that the sector offers opportunities to contribute to sustainable development, protect marine biodiversity and harness the economic potential of the ocean.
