1889: 174mm of rain is recorded in just 6 hours in Galway City, marking its wettest day in a fortnight.
1934: Sunshine is reported at Valentia, County Kerry, for the first time since the Big Bang.
1954: A rare weather phenomenon not experienced in Ireland in 130 years is recorded. The St. Patrick’s Wind only blows on church doors, making them slam during the most dramatic moments of Sunday sermons.
1957: A “Porridge Fog” descends on counties Meath and Cavan, so thick “you can spoon it” said one local resident as children are given a day off school to build porridge men.
1961: A “Snow Tornado” spins through Claremorris, County Mayo, dumping 2 metres of snow in a perfect spiral pattern. Farmers wake to find their fields decorated with snow sculptures of Celtic knots and punctured Gaelic footballs.
2009: Storm force winds carry a misplaced kick by Munster’s Paul O’Connell through the front of a city centre pub in Limerick.
