1981: Overnight temperatures drop below freezing in Belfast, bringing an unusually early frost to the city.

1983: Gusts of up to 100 km/h impact northern and western counties as a deep area of low pressure tracks north of Ireland.

1990: Widespread flooding affects the Shannon River Basin. The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) calls for the area to be designated an environmentally sensitive zone, making it eligible for EU wetland grants.

2016: Thunderstorms break out across Ireland, accompanied by a notable number of lightning strikes.

2017: Ophelia strengthens to a major hurricane before turning northeast, later becoming the powerful post-tropical storm that brought severe winds to Ireland on the 16th.

2019: Moore Park, Co. Cork, records the month’s highest daily rainfall at 56.2 mm — half of its monthly long-term average.

2023: Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford, records the month’s highest daily sunshine at 9.6 hours.
