1845: A committee is formed to examine the extent of the potato crop failure and suggest remedies.

1926: Ireland records its lowest October temperature at Markree Castle, Co Sligo, where the mercury drops to -8.3°C. Markree also holds the country’s monthly low records for January, March and April.

1968: Belfast records 52mm of rain, a record total for the date.

1988: The overnight temperature falls to -2.2°C at Casement Aerodrome, Dublin.

1989: Days of heavy rain trigger a landslide at Kilmeena near Westport, Co Mayo.

1992: Mullingar records an overnight low of -3.7°C.

2003: A large peat landslide occurs at Derrybrien in south Co Galway following heavy rain. The event pollutes a river and kills thousands of fish.

2014: The temperature reaches 19.4°C at Phoenix Park, Dublin, a record high for the date.

2020: Storm Aiden brings severe gusts of up to 130 km/h, causing widespread power outages affecting more than 8,000 homes and businesses.
