Killarney’s Record 1941 Rainfall Still Unmatched

On 9 November 1941, Killarney in County Kerry was drenched by an extraordinary 167.1mm of rain in just 24 hours, setting a record for the wettest November day ever recorded in Ireland.
The downpour followed a substantial 43.3mm of rain that had already fallen the previous day, compounding the impact on the town and surrounding areas.
Eighty-four years later, the daily total remains unbeaten for any November day across the country.
The heavy rain was associated with an Atlantic depression anchored to the northwest of Ireland. The system funnelled mild southwesterly winds and successive bands of rain over the southwest, triggering the exceptional rainfall.

The heaviest daily rainfall ever recorded in Ireland occurred on 18 September 1993, when Cloone Lake in County Kerry logged an astonishing 243.5mm of rain in just 24 hours.
