Flood and coastal defence works for Clare and Donegal

The Government has announced the approval of flood mitigation and coastal protection schemes for the County Clare seaside resort of Kilkee and the Donegal village of Inver.
On Thursday, the Office of Public Works (OPW) sanctioned Clare County Council‘s application for funding under the Office of Public Works’ Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
The OPW says the €88,763 planned works at Marine Parade in the West Clare town of Kilkee will include underpinning the existing sea walls with reinforced concrete foundation, filling voids and repointing the wall over sections where necessary.
The Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme was introduced by the Office of Public Works in 2009.
Since then, 42 funding applications by Clare County Council have been supported under this scheme.
The OPW also has approved additional funding of €45,000 for planned works at Inver in County Donegal, which include constructing a row of rock armour along the line of the existing gabions in order to protect these gabions from further damage.
This brings the total funding to €111,500 since 2016.
The purpose of the scheme is to provide funding to Local Authorities to undertake minor flood mitigation works or studies to address localised flooding and coastal protection problems within their administrative areas.
The scheme generally applies where a solution can be readily identified and achieved in a short time frame.
