Boost for Inishbofin Coastal Protection Works

The Office of Public Works (OPW) has approved an additional €90,000 in funding for coastal protection and flood mitigation works on Inishbofin Island, Co. Galway.
The funding, announced by Minister Kevin Moran, will support the detailed design phase of planned works aimed at strengthening the island’s defences against coastal erosion and flooding.
The approved project, led by Galway County Council, includes the transformation of the disused East Pier at Cloonamore Bay into a functioning breakwater, as well as the installation of rock-filled gabion baskets along the shoreline. These measures are intended to reduce the risk of coastal erosion and provide improved protection for the island community.
This latest allocation brings the total funding for the project to €200,157 to date.
The funding comes under the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, which has been supporting local authorities since its launch in 2009.
To date, 254 projects from Galway County Council have received support through the scheme.
