Above-Average Sunshine Recorded Across Ireland

Ireland experienced slightly above-average sunshine levels over the past week, with some parts of the country enjoying notably brighter conditions despite ongoing spells of unsettled weather.
According to Met Éireann, Belmullet in Co. Mayo recorded the highest sunshine total, logging 59.4 hours, which is 128% of the average for this time of year. Valentia in Co. Kerry reported the lowest sunshine levels, with just 32.6 hours, or 84% of the norm.
While the coming week is expected to bring more unsettled weather, sunshine levels are forecast to be near or slightly below average, as cloud cover and scattered showers return.
Rainfall Above Average
Rainfall totals over the past seven days were higher than normal, with Valentia again recording the most at 46.8mm. In contrast, Dublin Airport reported the lowest at 16.4mm. These figures represent 111% to 258% of the typical rainfall expected for early June.
The week ahead will remain somewhat unsettled, but rainfall amounts are expected to be lighter overall, with below-average totals forecast for much of the country.
Temperatures to Rise After Cooler Week
Mean air temperatures last week were generally below average, ranging from 10.9°C to 12.2°C. However, a shift is expected, with temperatures forecast to trend 1°C to 2°C above normal in the coming days.
Soil temperatures remain slightly warmer than average, between 0.7°C and 2°C above the seasonal norm, and are likely to remain stable or slightly elevated through the week.
Drying and Spraying Conditions to Vary
Today offers good drying conditions in areas avoiding showers, but the remainder of the week will bring limited opportunities due to frequent rain and unsettled spells.
Similarly, spraying will be possible in many areas today (Sunday) and again on Tuesday, but conditions may not be favourable throughout the rest of the week.
Field Conditions Remain Mixed Nationwide
Soil moisture deficits (SMDs) currently range from 0mm to +45mm, with the driest soils in the south. In contrast, soils in the north midlands and northwest are near saturation, and further deterioration is expected in these areas. The southern half of the country may see an increase in soil moisture deficits, indicating relatively drier conditions.
Potato Blight Advisory Issued for Several Regions
A potato blight advisory has been issued for parts of the country, effective from the evening of Monday, 9th June to Tuesday, 10th June. Areas at risk include west Munster, Connacht, north Leinster, and Ulster.
Farmers are advised to take advantage of spraying opportunities today, with further guidance and maps available on the Met Éireann website.
