Big Rain Divide Across Ireland

rainfall

There’s been a stark contrast in rainfall across Ireland this past week.

The north and west were soaked, recording up to 45.5mm — more than 2.5 times the average — while parts of the south and east saw as little as 1mm.

Most other regions were closer to normal. Looking ahead, much of the coming week will be dry with just light showers at times, though heavier rain is possible by Friday, particularly in the west.

Temperatures have been generally near or slightly above normal, with soil temperatures well above average by 1–3°C.

Sunshine varied too — coastal areas fared better, while inland stations were notably duller. Malin Head in Donegal was the standout, recording 40.9 hours of sunshine (123% of normal).

According to Met Éireann, drying and spraying conditions will remain limited over the weekend but improve into early next week, with Tuesday shaping up to be the best day.

Field conditions are waterlogged in the west and northwest, while soils are drier in the south. Any heavy rain later in the week could see saturated ground return to already wet areas.
