East Soaked as Rainfall Hits 500% of Normal

The past seven days have brought dramatic contrasts in rainfall across Ireland, with some eastern counties drenched while parts of the midlands and northwest remained relatively dry.
According to Met Éireann, Casement Aerodrome in Co. Dublin recorded a hefty 66.9mm of rainfall — more than five times the July average (507%). Meanwhile, Knock Airport in Co. Mayo logged just 3.3mm, amounting to a mere 15% of the norm.
Looking ahead, conditions are expected to settle somewhat, though spells of light rain and scattered showers will continue. Rainfall totals should be close to or slightly above average in most regions, with southern Munster likely to remain drier than usual.
Air temperatures were generally near or slightly above normal, with average weekly values between 15.2°C and 17.1°C. Soil temperatures were well above seasonal norms, ranging from 16.5°C to 19°C — up to 2.6°C above average. These elevated soil temperatures are forecast to persist into the coming week.
Sunshine has also been in short supply, particularly in the east. Dublin Airport recorded just 10.8 hours of sunshine — only 30% of the average for this time of year. Cork Airport saw a brighter week with 29.5 hours, amounting to 79% of the average. With a mixed forecast ahead, sunshine levels are expected to return closer to normal.
