Rainfall Totals Vary Sharply Across Ireland

Heavy rain in Ireland

Met Éireann’s latest weekly farming commentary reports a mixed weather picture for Irish agriculture, with above-average soil temperatures and uneven rainfall distribution across the country.

While parts of eastern Ireland experienced very heavy rain at the beginning of the week — with Casement Aerodrome in Dublin recording 52mm over seven days — much of the country was significantly drier. Only 1.8mm of rainfall was recorded at Ballyhaise in County Cavan, highlighting the stark regional contrasts.

Looking ahead, Met Éireann forecasts a week of occasional rain and drizzle, with rainfall amounts expected to be around or slightly above average. Most areas can expect 20 to 30mm of rain over the coming seven-day period.

Temperature-wise, air temperatures during the past week were near or slightly above normal, ranging from 14.8°C to 17°C. Soil temperatures were notably higher than average, reaching 16.3°C to 18.9°C, which is 1.2°C to 2.8°C above normal. Both air and soil temperatures are expected to remain at similar levels in the week ahead.

However, it has been a dull week overall in terms of sunshine, with below-average totals nationwide. The east was particularly affected, with just 10.6 hours of sunshine reported at Dublin Airport — only 29% of the normal amount. In contrast, the south and parts of the west fared better, with Cork Airport recording 28 hours of sunshine (75% of average). The coming week is also expected to bring near or below normal sunshine levels, given the unsettled conditions.
