Soils Remain Damp but Dry Days Provide Relief

Farmers can expect moderate to good drying conditions through much of the coming week, according to Met Éireann’s latest farming commentary.
Long dry spells between scattered showers are set to offer valuable windows for fieldwork and spraying.
The national forecaster says that spraying opportunities will improve, with wind speeds expected to remain moderate or below for most of the week.
Soil moisture deficits (SMDs) currently range between 5 and 50mm across the country. However, soils in parts of the west and northeast are struggling to dry out, particularly in areas with poor drainage where waterlogging remains an issue.
Well-drained and moderately drained soils in these regions are close to saturation, with little change expected despite upcoming dry periods. Elsewhere, SMDs are expected to rise over the coming days, reaching between 20 and 60mm as more settled spells take hold.
Met Éireann’s outlook suggests a mixed week overall, but with plenty of dry interludes to support harvesting, spraying, and other field operations.
