Valentia Drenched With Three Times Normal Rainfall

Rainfall levels soared well above normal across Ireland last week, with Valentia Observatory in Co Kerry recording 86.7mm, three times its average for the period.
According to Met Éireann, Casement Aerodrome in Co Dublin logged just 14.6mm, close to its normal levels.
The unsettled pattern of heavy showers and longer spells of rain is forecast to continue nationwide over the coming week, keeping rainfall amounts above average.
Mean air temperatures were slightly below normal, ranging from 11.7 degrees at Knock Airport, Co Mayo to 14 degrees at Roches Point, Co Cork. The coming week is expected to bring near-normal readings of 12 to 14 degrees. Soil temperatures held between 13 and 15 degrees and are forecast to remain similar.
Sunshine levels were generally above average, with Cork Airport enjoying 47.3 hours, while Knock Airport saw just 21.1 hours. Mixed conditions are likely in the week ahead with some bright spells breaking through.
Drying conditions will briefly improve tomorrow and into Wednesday once overnight rain clears, but poor to very poor drying will dominate later in the week. Opportunities for spraying will be limited to brief windows tomorrow and in northern areas on Thursday.
Soils remain driest in parts of Leinster and east Munster, where moisture deficits range from 14 to 31mm. Elsewhere, saturated or waterlogged ground is widespread and expected to extend further as the wet weather continues.
