Rainfall across Ireland over the past seven days was generally above normal, with some areas in the southeast seeing totals more than three times their usual amounts.

According to Met Éireann, Johnstown Castle in Co. Wexford recorded 64.3mm of rain, 301% of the average for the period, while Belmullet in Co. Mayo saw the lowest total at 21.4mm, around 86% of normal.

The north midlands and parts of the west recorded slightly below-average rainfall, highlighting regional differences in last week’s wet weather.

Looking ahead, high pressure is expected to dominate, bringing drier-than-normal conditions for much of the country. Rain will return briefly later in the week, particularly to the east, before high pressure reasserts itself. Overall, weekly rainfall is expected to remain below normal, except in parts of the east and northeast, where totals may reach average levels.

Temperatures over the last week were slightly below normal, with mean air temperatures ranging from 11.0°C at Knock/Ireland West Airport in Co. Mayo to 13.2°C at Roches Point in Co. Cork. Soil temperatures were above average, ranging from 12.2°C to 14.6°C. For the coming week, cooler-than-normal conditions are expected, with average air temperatures between 11°C and 14°C and soil temperatures declining slightly.

Sunshine totals were close to normal across Ireland. Valentia Observatory in Co. Kerry recorded the least sun at 21.9 hours, while Johnstown Castle saw the most at 32.6 hours. Over the coming week, good spells of sunshine are forecast, although cloudier periods are likely on Friday and into the weekend.
