Tuesday brought a wind gust of 107 km/h and scattered heavy showers across Ireland.

A Copernicus Sentinel-2A satellite image of the island shortly before midday showed large cumulus clouds, which produced downpours in places throughout the day.

Malin Head reported 7.6 mm of rainfall during the day, bringing its monthly total to 104.3 mm, just 5 mm short of its seasonal average. Athenry, which recorded 6 mm on Tuesday, has already exceeded its long-term October average of 118 mm by 9 mm.

Elsewhere, Malin Head in Co Donegal recorded a 107 km/h wind gust, by far the strongest gust on the island of Ireland during Tuesday.

Zoomed-in images of Ireland showed autumn colours in the forests of the Wicklow Mountains, silt being washed by the River Maine into Kerry’s Castlemaine Harbour following heavy rain, and waves breaking onto the beach near Portstewart in Co Derry.

Ireland’s weather will remain unsettled through the next week to 10 days. Weather warnings are in place for 12 counties on Thursday.
