Rainfall-1200x675 Flooding reported in south as two inches of rain falls

Almost two inches of rain has fallen in Valentia, County Kerry, up to 1pm today. Cork Airport has recorded 39 millimetres while Gurteen in Tipperary has seen around an inch of rain.

A Status Yellow rainfall warning for 12 counties remains in place until this evening as bands of heavy and persistent rain continue to move across the country.

Cork County Council has reported widespread flooding in several areas across the county. Roads are impassible at Idle Bridge in Ballineen, parts of Carrigaline Ballea Road, and the R621 at Kilvealaton West/Newberry. Sections of Carrigaline Main Street are closed, while flooding has also been reported at Crossbarry, Killumney, Halfway Village, and Banduff Road. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and avoid flooded areas where possible.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow rain warning for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Tipperary, and Waterford valid to 5pm. Similarly, the UK Met Office has issued a Yellow rain warning for Northern Ireland counties including Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry until 9pm, with persistent heavy rain likely to cause travel disruption and brief flooding in some areas.

Further rainfall totals of 20 or more millimetres are expected widely across the warning area through this afternoon and evening, with higher amounts on hills and upland regions.

Further spells of rain are expected up to this weekend. There will be occasional drier spells and temperatures will begin to fall closer to average for the time of year. Overnight temperatures may approach freezing in sheltered inland locations next week.
