Heavy Cargo Service for Donegal’s Small Islands

The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, has approved funding of €9,900 for a new heavy cargo service to serve six small islands off the Donegal coast.
The year-long service will be operated by Comharchumann na nOileán Beag and will provide eight sailings in its first year to: Inis Bó Finne, Gabhla, Inis Oirthear, Inis Caorach, Inis Mhic a’ Doirn, and Inis Fraoigh. During this period, demand for the service will be assessed to guide future provision.
The contract to run the service has been awarded, following a procurement process, to Réalt na Maidne Teo.
Announcing the funding, Minister Calleary said, “I am delighted to provide this funding to Comharchumann na nOileán Beag to establish a new heavy cargo service. Cargo services are vital to island communities. While this is a modest initiative, it will make a real difference by giving residents continuous, regular, and affordable access to cargo transport for the first time.”
“With significant construction underway on these islands — from new builds to renovations — this service will be a valuable support to the community,” he added.
Comharchumann na nOileán Beag will oversee delivery of the service to ensure it meets the needs of the islanders.
