Nolan takes over Marine Institute’s environment division

The Marine Institute has appointed Dr Glenn Nolan as Director of Marine Environment and Food Safety Services (MEFSS).
In his new role, Dr Nolan will oversee teams working in fish health, marine environmental chemistry, shellfish safety, quality control, benthos science, licensing advisory services and marine spatial planning. He said his focus will be on ensuring these areas work closely together and on fostering the ongoing development of scientific and advisory expertise.
“It is a great honour to be joining colleagues as Director of Marine Environment and Food Safety Services as we strive to enhance the services that the Marine Institute provides to a wide range of clients and users across the marine domain in Ireland,” Dr Nolan said.
A graduate in oceanography from the University of Galway, he joined the institute in 2003. He has played a key role in securing major marine research and development projects through national and EU programmes including Interreg, Framework 7 and Horizon 2020. These have contributed significantly to Ireland’s ocean observing and forecasting capabilities.
Outside his scientific work, Dr Nolan has chaired SCCUL Enterprises CLG, which supports local businesses along with social and well-being services in east Galway. He also lectures on marine science at both undergraduate and postgraduate level at Atlantic Technological University and the University of Malta.
“Glenn brings a wealth of experience in Irish and international marine and environmental science and industry,” said Dr Rick Officer, the institute’s chief executive. “His strategic insight and professional expertise will be vital in advancing our mission to safeguard Ireland’s marine environment and uphold the highest standards in seafood safety.”
