Agencies Issue Bank Holiday Water Safety Warning

The Irish Coast Guard, Water Safety Ireland and the RNLI have issued a joint warning to the public to take extra care around Ireland’s coastline this Bank Holiday weekend as more people head to beaches, rivers and open water for swimming, kayaking and boating.
Sea temperatures around Ireland currently range from 12 to 14 degrees Celsius, with the coolest waters along the western seaboard.
Meanwhile, Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow Small Craft warning for all coasts of Ireland from 4pm on Friday to 5am on Sunday, with northwesterly winds expected to reach force 6 or higher.
Cold water, strong currents and hidden hazards can pose serious risks even to experienced swimmers.
The agencies emphasised that preparation and awareness are essential for staying safe. They advised planning ahead by checking weather and tide forecasts and being aware of changing conditions.
Swimmers should never go alone and should always inform someone of their intended route and expected return time. Entering the water gradually helps the body adjust and reduces the risk of cold-water shock. Visibility is important, and swimmers are encouraged to wear bright caps and consider using a tow float. People should stay within depths they are comfortable with and swim parallel to the shore to avoid rip currents. If caught in difficulty, they should float, remain calm and signal for help.
Anyone witnessing someone in danger on the water or along the coast should contact the Coast Guard immediately on Marine VHF Channel 16 or dial 112.
The agencies stressed that respecting local conditions, following guidance from lifeguards and remaining vigilant will help ensure a safe Bank Holiday weekend on the water.
