A timeline of notable weather events and extremes that have taken place in Ireland on October 21st throughout history.
1988 – West Cork and Kerry floods
Torrential rain caused mountain streams to overflow, flooding thousands of acres of farmland in West Cork and Kerry. Roads were badly damaged as floodwaters surged through valleys and low-lying areas.
1991 – Flooding in Dublin, Belfast and Strabane
Persistent heavy rain led to flooding across parts of the east and north. Streets in Dublin and Belfast were waterlogged, while the River Mourne burst its banks in Strabane, Co Tyrone, inundating nearby homes and businesses.
1996 – Exceptionally wet October continues
Wet and unsettled conditions affected southern and southwestern counties. The month would turn out to be Ireland’s wettest October on record, with an extraordinary 790 mm of rainfall measured in the Cummeragh Mountains, Co Kerry.
2017 – Storm Brian strikes
Just days after the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia, Storm Brian crossed the centre of Ireland, bringing heavy downpours, coastal flooding in Limerick and spot flooding in parts of Co Cork. Strong winds and high seas battered Atlantic coasts.
2019 – October sunshine in Cork
In a contrast to the usual autumn gloom, Cork Airport recorded 9.3 hours of sunshine, the highest daily sunshine for the month of October.
