An investigation is under way after the headless body of a stag was found at Newbridge Estate and Farm in Donabate, North County Dublin.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service and An Garda Siochána are examining what is being treated as a serious wildlife crime. Staff at Newbridge Demesne made the discovery on Thursday morning when they went to feed the herd of Irish red deer. The eight year old stag, one of only two in the herd, had been killed overnight by intruders who broke into the park.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service is appealing for information about any suspicious activity in or around the estate, nearby land or approach roads between 23:00 on Wednesday 26 November and 06:00 on Thursday 27 November. Information can be given in confidence to the National Parks and Wildlife Service or to Gardaí in Swords.

Fingal County Council said the incident has caused significant distress to staff and to the local community. The Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tom O’Leary, said he was shocked by what had happened. He said he had visited the park with his granddaughters who enjoyed seeing the deer herd and he described the stag as a wonderful animal. He urged anyone with information to contact Gardaí or the National Parks and Wildlife Service. He also noted that it is illegal to kill deer without a licence.

Ivan Smith, foreman of works at Newbridge House and Traditional Farm, said staff were devastated. He described the stag as a gentle animal with an impressive set of antlers who was a favourite among visitors.

Gardaí and the National Parks and Wildlife Service are continuing their investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Garda Confidential Line or email wildlifeenforcement@npws.gov.ie.
