Forty-five years ago today, on 19 June 1980, Met Éireann officially opened its new headquarters in Glasnevin, Dublin. The state-of-the-art facility was unveiled by then Minister for Transport, Albert Reynolds.

Perched on Glasnevin Hill, the eye-catching pyramid-shaped building was the work of acclaimed architect Liam McCormick.

Inside, the headquarters housed a cutting-edge array of computers and advanced technology—allowing for the collection of weather data from stations across Ireland and satellites orbiting the Earth. This information fed into the production of increasingly accurate forecasting charts.

The historic day was covered in an RTÉ News report by the late Derek Davis, broadcast on the evening of 19 June 1980.
