Southwest Sees Nearly Double Average Rainfall

Parts of the southwest experienced almost double their usual rainfall over the past week, according to the latest Met Éireann farming commentary.
Valentia Observatory in Co. Kerry recorded 51.44mm of rain, 191 per cent of the weekly average, making it the wettest location in the country. By contrast, some eastern and southeastern areas remained relatively dry, with Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford recording just 9.5mm, 49 per cent of the average.
Low pressure systems are expected to maintain unsettled conditions for the coming week, with further above-average rainfall predicted nationwide. The southwest is likely to see the heaviest rain, with totals of up to 85mm possible, raising concerns for farmland drainage and soil conditions.
Temperatures over the past seven days were above average, with Shannon Airport in Co. Clare reaching 17.2 degrees. Mean air temperatures are forecast to return to average or slightly below in the coming week, ranging between 13 and 15 degrees.
Sunshine was below average across much of the country, except for the east and southeast, where Johnstown Castle recorded 42.8 hours of sun. With unsettled weather continuing, sunshine is expected to remain limited.
