Fota Wildlife Park in Co Cork has closed its gates to the public for two days following confirmation of avian influenza cases.

The temporary suspension of access on Tuesday and Wednesday comes after the park alerted the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine to possible bird flu infections among its avian population. The precautionary measure is aimed at limiting any potential spread of the virus and allowing for further investigation and monitoring.

The Department confirmed on Tuesday evening that the reported cases have tested positive for the H5N1 avian influenza virus. RTÉ reported that the positive cases were from three dead geese and a fourth sick goose that were part of a flock of 20 at the park.

Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that affects both wild and domestic birds. While transmission to humans is rare, outbreaks can have serious implications for animal health and biodiversity, particularly in conservation settings like Fota.

The park, which is home to a wide range of exotic and native bird species, has previously taken steps to safeguard its animals during periods of heightened risk.

Visitors who had planned trips to Fota Wildlife Park during the affected dates are advised to monitor the park’s website and social media channels for updates. The park is expected to reopen once health authorities are satisfied that the risk has been contained.
