East and South Soaked as Northwest Remains Driest Part of Ireland

Southern and eastern counties saw more than double their usual rainfall over the past week, while the northwest remained unusually dry, according to Met Éireann’s latest weekly climate summary.
Cork Airport recorded 77.1mm of rain, equivalent to 259% of the long-term average, making it one of the wettest locations in the country. In contrast, Belmullet in Co Mayo measured just 12.4mm, or around 20% of average levels, highlighting how the northwest has been the driest region over the past seven days.
Met Éireann said weather conditions will stay mixed in the coming week, with showers and spells of rain expected alongside drier intervals. The heaviest rainfall is likely in the west and north, where totals may reach or exceed average levels, while other regions should see a relative easing after a wet spell.
Mean air temperatures ranged from 10.4 to 12.7 degrees, up to 1.8 degrees above normal. Cooler conditions are forecast later this week, with average temperatures falling to between 9 and 11 degrees and the possibility of grass frost by the weekend.
Sunshine was below average nationwide, with levels between 50% and 86% of normal. Valentia, Co Kerry, recorded the lowest total at 9.2 hours, while Johnstown Castle, Co Wexford, was the brightest with 18.4 hours.
With further showers expected and temperatures dropping, drying conditions will remain poor in the days ahead.
