Carrick-on-Shannon crowned Ireland’s Tidiest Town

Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim has been named Ireland’s Tidiest Town for 2025.
The announcement was made today by Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary TD, at the SuperValu TidyTowns awards ceremony in Croke Park.
Around 600 volunteers attended the event in Dublin, with many more watching online. A record 929 towns entered this year’s competition, the highest number since it began in 1958.
Carrick-on-Shannon claimed the top award as well as being named Ireland’s Tidiest Small Town. The Minister praised the town’s long-standing involvement in the competition, noting that it has taken part consistently for four decades.
Other top awards went to Rosscarbery, Co Cork, which was named Ireland’s Tidiest Village, Dalkey, Co Dublin, which was awarded Ireland’s Tidiest Large Town, and Tralee, Co Kerry, which took the title of Ireland’s Tidiest Large Urban Centre.
The Gaeltacht Award was presented to Carraig Airt TidyTowns in Co Donegal, while the Young Persons in TidyTowns award went to Corofin TidyTowns in Co Clare.
SuperValu has sponsored the competition since 1991. Its managing director, Luke Hanlon, said the awards celebrated the work of more than 30,000 volunteers across the country who have collectively given over one million hours to community improvement this year.
He noted that 70% of TidyTowns groups have been active for more than a decade and that the competition continues to attract new volunteers, including students and younger participants.
Minister Calleary also announced €1.5 million in new funding to support TidyTowns groups in their ongoing work. Since 2017, more than €12 million has been provided to support local projects.
He said the continued focus on sustainability and biodiversity in local initiatives was “particularly impressive and important for us all”.
The SuperValu TidyTowns competition is organised by the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht and sponsored by SuperValu.
