RNLI rescues two on Lough Derg

Two people were brought to safety on Sunday after their motor cruiser suffered engine failure on Lough Derg near Terryglass in County Tipperary.
The Valentia Coast Guard requested assistance from Lough Derg RNLI shortly before midday. The RNLI lifeboat Jean Spier launched at 11.35am with helm Steve Smyth and three crew members on board. Conditions on the lake were challenging, with southerly winds at Force 4 and frequent squalls.
When the lifeboat arrived at the scene around 12pm, the vessel was drifting as its anchor was dragging. Both people on board were found safe, wearing lifejackets, and unharmed.

Given the forecast for persistent strong winds, the RNLI decided to tow the vessel to Terryglass Harbour. The lifeboat crew first took the cruiser on an astern tow before switching to an alongside tow to navigate the narrow channel into the harbour. The casualty vessel was secured at 12.44pm, and the lifeboat returned to station by 1.14pm.
Steve Smyth, volunteer helm at Lough Derg RNLI, praised the actions of the skipper. “The skipper of the casualty vessel took the correct action in dropping anchor and immediately calling for help. If you find yourself in difficulty, dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard,” he said.
