Progress on redevelopment of Mayo pier

The Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, Dara Calleary, has announced funding of €157,300 for Mayo County Council to prepare a preliminary business case for improvements at Roonagh pier in Co Mayo.
The announcement was made in Westport on Monday following a meeting with representatives of Clare Island and Inishturk. Roonagh pier is the mainland departure point for ferry services to both islands.
The need for upgrades was highlighted in an Islands Connectivity Report commissioned by Mayo County Council, with departmental funding, which identified Roonagh as a priority for investment.
The funding will allow the council to appoint consultant engineers to prepare the business case and strategic assessment for marine infrastructure improvements.
Mr Calleary said he had recently visited Clare Island and Inishturk and was “very well aware of the need for progress at Roonagh”. He described the investment as “an important first step for this essential infrastructure development”.
He added that urgent works were also required at the piers on Clare Island and Inishturk and said officials would continue to engage with Mayo County Council on those projects.

“Access between the islands and the mainland is the most fundamental requirement for those living on our offshore islands and is a lifeline for island communities,” the Minister said.
Mayo County Council Cathaoirleach, Cllr Seán Carey, welcomed the announcement, describing it as “an important step in improving vital infrastructure that supports our island communities”.
