Birdwatch Ireland urges caution on use of auto-ID apps

Birdwatch Ireland has advised volunteers not to rely solely on smartphone apps that identify birds by sound or image, warning that the technology is not yet accurate enough to ensure high-quality survey data.
Tools such as the popular Merlin Bird ID app can be useful for learning bird songs and calls, but Birdwatch Ireland says their outputs cannot currently replace the careful observation and listening skills of trained surveyors.
The organisation is particularly clear that participants in the Countryside Bird Survey (CBS) and the Irish Wetland Bird Survey (I-WeBS) should continue to confirm records through direct sight or sound. Auto-ID tools can only be used for confirmatory purposes.
“CBS and I-WeBS will, for the time being, remain surveys conducted by human surveyors,” the organisation said. It also noted that the long-term effects of widespread auto-ID use on monitoring results are not yet fully understood.
Birdwatch Ireland acknowledges the potential of these tools to improve data collection in the future and to engage a broader audience, but stresses that accuracy and reliability are currently paramount. The organisation will continue to monitor developments in auto-ID technology and update guidance as improvements are made.
