BirdWatch Ireland is marking the first anniversary of the passing of Steve Wing, long-serving Wildlife Officer at Cape Clear Bird Observatory, with the launch of the Steve Wing Memorial Bursary. Steve passed away on 19th September 2024.

A lifelong birder, Steve was renowned for his dedication to bird monitoring and ringing, particularly during migration periods at Cape Clear Island. He was also passionate about education, generously sharing his extensive natural history knowledge in his characteristic unassuming way.

The bursary, aimed at young aspiring ecologists and naturalists aged 18-25, will provide training, mentorship, and practical field experience in ornithology and ecology. Recipients will gain hands-on experience recording bird migration at one of Ireland’s most celebrated bird observatories.

Each year, BirdWatch Ireland will advertise for applications for the €1,000 bursary. This includes two weeks’ accommodation at Cape Clear Bird Observatory, valued at €600, with the remaining €400 to support travel and living costs. A committee including BirdWatch Ireland staff, Cape Clear islanders, and Steve Wing’s family will oversee the bursary process.

Steve’s family said: “If the bursary can assist a student in any small way along the path towards a career in natural history, what a fine tribute to Steve, to all his hard work and to his love of the natural world this will be.”

The 2025 inaugural bursary has been awarded to Lauren O’Brien. Details of the 2026 application process will be available on BirdWatch Ireland’s website and social media channels in early 2026.
