Birdwatchers in Ireland have reported an unusually high number of Lapland Bunting sightings over the past ten days, with the hardy Arctic visitor appearing in several coastal locations.

Today, the bird was recorded for the seventh time in ten days at Tacumshin, County Wexford.

Other notable sightings during this period include Loop Head in County Clare, Dursey Island in Cork, and both Tory Island and Glencolmcille in Donegal.

The Lapland Bunting is an uncommon winter visitor, arriving from its Arctic breeding grounds in late September and October. It typically favours coastal areas, saltmarshes, and arable fields along the east and northeast coasts. Sightings have been recorded in every month except June and July.

Usually seen alone, the birds can occasionally be found in small flocks. Experienced birders often identify them by their subtle grey and brown winter plumage or their distinctive rolling call.
