Asian Hornet Alert: Further Sightings Confirmed in Belfast

The Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA) has confirmed additional sightings of the invasive Asian Hornet in the Dundonald area of Belfast, just days after the first confirmed capture of the species in Northern Ireland.
The latest reports suggest the likely presence of a nest in the area. NIEA officials are now deploying track and trace methods to locate and remove any potential nests before the hornets can spread further.
The Asian Hornet, known for its threat to native pollinators and potential risk to public health, is not established in Northern Ireland. Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected sightings, ideally with a photograph, through the Asian Hornet Watch app or the CEDaR invasive species online portal.
Officials stress that suspected nests should not be approached or disturbed under any circumstances. Instead, sightings should be reported immediately to allow trained personnel to respond.
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is coordinating the response and will continue to monitor the situation closely.
