Low Rainbow photographed over Dublin Bay

Photographer René Bruun captured a rare low rainbow over Dublin Bay and the Irish Sea on Monday afternoon.

As scattered heavy showers, accompanied by thunderstorms, moved westward across Ireland, René spotted the optical phenomenon in the afternoon sky at Malahide.

A low rainbow appears close to the horizon, often giving the impression that it’s near the ground. It forms when sunlight passes through water droplets, bending and dispersing into colours.

The low appearance happens when the sun is near the horizon, typically in the early morning or late afternoon, and is accentuated by rain or showers in the distance.

Although it seems to touch the ground, that is just an optical effect.
