First swallows of 2025 arrive in Ireland

One swallow may not make a summer – but what about five?
A quintet of our summer visitors has already made it to Ireland with sightings this week of swallows in Moyne, County Longford (1) and Cape Clear Island in Cork (1) on Thursday and Cahore in County Wexford (3) on Wednesday.
According to Irishbirding.com, there were sporadic reports of the bird’s presence over the winter, but the past week’s fine weather had led to a spike in sightings.
Just after St Patrick’s Day on March 17th is the traditional time for the arrival of the first swallows, so this week’s sightings are slightly ahead of schedule.
Swallows can have multiple broods over the course of the summer in Ireland before departing for Africa in in late September or early October.
