Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) has announced funding for community-based geoheritage projects, with grants of up to €10,000 available for 2025–26.

The Geoheritage Grant scheme supports local initiatives that promote Ireland’s geological heritage through education, public outreach and geotourism. The deadline for applications is 6pm on September 24th, 2025.

Eligible projects include the production of books, maps or guides, the development of trails and signage, geoheritage-related site preparation, or innovative media and online content. The scheme is open to groups across the Republic of Ireland.

The funding is designed to help communities raise awareness of their local geoheritage, support projects aspiring to geopark status and assist UNESCO Global Geoparks in maintaining their place within the Global Geoparks Network.

Geoheritage is defined by GSI as part of the natural heritage of an area, made up of geological features with scientific, educational or cultural value. It includes sites and collections of geological specimens with paleontological, geomorphological, mineralogical, petrological or stratigraphical significance.

Successful projects will run for a maximum of 12 months. Applications must be submitted by email following the guidelines set out in the official scheme document, which is available on the GSI website.
