New opportunities for Graduate Geologists in Ireland

Geological Survey Ireland (GSI) has advertised vacancies for six 11-month Graduate Geologist positions.
Founded in 1845, Geological Survey Ireland is Ireland’s public earth science knowledge centre and is a division of the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications.
The Graduate Geologist positions relate to the areas of Tellus & Education, INFOMAR, Groundwater, Coastal Change, Geothermal, and Historical Mines/Critical Raw Materials.
GSI says applicants must hold, or be due to be conferred with, an Honours degree (2.2 or higher) in Geology or a related discipline. Year of graduation must be 2023, 2024 or 2025.
The closing date for applications is 1.00 PM on Friday, 2 May 2025.
Meanwhile, the GSI’s Tellus survey is currently undertaking the final phases of a national airborne survey over counties Kerry and Clare.
The geophysical instruments on board the low-flying aircraft include a magnetometer which measures the variations in the Earth’s magnetic field, and a gamma ray detector which measures the natural radioactivity of shallow soil and rocks.
Tellus, a national mapping programme managed by Geological Survey Ireland (GSI), is collecting geochemical and geophysical data on rocks, soil, and water across Ireland.

To gather this data, scientific equipment is fitted to a plane which flies in a grid pattern.
The survey planes are predominantly based at Shannon airport under permit as approved by the Irish Aviation Authority.
The Irish government says Ireland is on course to becoming one of the best geophysical mapped countries in the world.
