OPW approves funding for flood study in East Cork

The Office of Public Works has approved €116,235 in funding for flood mitigation works in Mogeely, Co Cork.
The allocation, made under the OPW’s Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme, will fund a study examining options to reduce flood risk in the catchment upstream of the village, which is located just north of Castlemartyr.
Cork County Council applied for the funding as part of ongoing efforts to address localised flooding issues. The study will explore potential solutions and assess their viability before any mitigation measures are advanced.
Since the introduction of the scheme in 2009, Cork County Council has received support for 62 projects across the county. The scheme provides financial assistance to local authorities to carry out small-scale flood relief works or studies, with up to 90 per cent of costs covered for projects valued at less than €750,000.
The OPW said that all applications are assessed on economic, social and environmental criteria, with local authorities responsible for ensuring that works do not displace flood risks elsewhere.
Approved works remain a matter for the local authority to initiate and manage.
