Wicklow RNLI Responds to Two Weekend Callouts

Wicklow RNLI launched twice over the August bank holiday weekend in response to incidents off the Irish coast.
On Friday evening, 1 August, the all-weather lifeboat RNLB Bridie O’Shea launched at 7:00pm under the command of coxswain Nicky Keogh. The crew responded to reports of a yacht with two people on board experiencing mechanical difficulties approximately four miles north of Wicklow Harbour.
Conditions were reported as calm, with slight seas and little wind. Following an assessment, the yacht was taken under tow as it was unable to sail and its engine had failed. The vessel was brought safely alongside in Wicklow Harbour by 8:00pm. The volunteer crew then prepared the lifeboat for service.
“This was a quick response by the crew which led to the casualty yacht being safely secured in Wicklow Harbour,” said Coxswain Keogh.
Less than 24 hours later, on Saturday 2 August, the lifeboat was alerted again at 12:54pm after reports were received of a person in difficulty in the water south of Mizen Head. While en route, the crew were informed that the individual had made it ashore safely. The lifeboat was stood down and returned to station.
Wicklow RNLI Deputy Lifeboat Press Officer Connie O’Gara reminded the public to stay safe on the water.
“We would remind people when going on the water to wear a lifejacket and have a suitable means of communication to call for help should the need arise. Should you get into difficulty or see someone else in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coast Guard,” she said.
