Dublin Named Ireland’s Most EV-Ready County

Dublin has been named Ireland’s most prepared county for the electric vehicle (EV) transition, according to a new nationwide ranking compiled by energy provider Energia.
The capital leads a list of counties scored on an EV Readiness Index, which takes into account public charging availability and the rate of electric vehicle uptake.
With close to 2,000 public charging points and over 9,000 new EV registrations recorded in 2024 alone, Dublin ranked first with an overall score of 160. As the country’s most densely populated county, its heavy investment in charging infrastructure has helped it stay ahead of fast-growing EV demand.
Wicklow came second with a score of 128, driven by strong infrastructure and a high per capita rate of EV adoption. Westmeath secured third place (122), standing out for its rural location yet boasting the highest charger density in the country, with 187 public chargers per 100,000 people.
Kildare and Clare completed the top five, scoring 111 and 104 respectively. Kildare has seen one of the highest rates of EV registrations per capita, while Clare continues to build on its strong green credentials with expanding infrastructure and consistent uptake.
Energia’s report also highlights several other counties making strong progress. Cork ranked sixth, balancing EV adoption and infrastructure over a wide geographic area. Louth and Waterford also made the top ten, praised for their compact layouts and improving charger access.
However, the analysis found that some rural counties, including Mayo, Leitrim, and Roscommon, remain at the lower end of the scale. These areas tend to have lower charger density and slower EV uptake. The report suggests that rurality is a key factor in this trend, though targeted investment in charging infrastructure and increased public awareness of EV incentives could help bridge the gap.
Andrew Dunne, EV Product Owner at Energia, said the findings underscore both the progress being made and the areas where further support is needed.
“As an energy supplier, Energia recognises the crucial role we play in supporting the transition to electric vehicles,” he said. “We offer tailored tariffs and bundles for EV owners, and through our partnership with Zapmap, we’re helping drivers easily locate charging solutions. We also provide free home chargers with a number of leading EV brands, including Kia, Hyundai, Opel, Peugeot and others.”
