Uisce Éireann Issues National Water Conservation Appeal

With a spell of hot, dry weather on the horizon, Uisce Éireann has issued a nationwide appeal urging households and businesses to reduce water use, warning that supplies are already under pressure in some areas.
The call comes as a hosepipe ban remains in force for the Mullingar Regional Water Supply, which serves over 50,000 people across County Westmeath. The supply, drawn from Lough Owel, has come under sustained strain following months of dry conditions dating back to last autumn.
“Every drop counts,” said Margaret Attridge, Head of Water Operations at Uisce Éireann. “We’re asking the public to make small, practical changes in how they use water at home, in the garden and at work.”
The utility is ramping up efforts to protect supply, including increased leak detection, pipe repairs and the installation of eight new control valves on the Mullingar network to reduce bursts and improve flow. A new trial of smart water meters is also set to begin in the area, aimed at improving real-time monitoring and speeding up repairs.
While supplies remain stable in most areas, Uisce Éireann warned that warm, dry weather can quickly lead to problems, particularly in high-demand zones or where sources are already low.
The utility has also launched an online water conservation calculator to help users track their water use and identify ways to cut back.
