RTÉ has rolled out a major upgrade to its weather forecasting service, introducing a new graphics system and refreshed on-screen presentation. The development marks the first significant visual overhaul in more than eight years.

The new system features a dynamic 3D map of Ireland with detailed topography, allowing viewers to better visualise mountains, valleys and coastlines. Individual towns and regions are now highlighted, making localised forecasts more accessible and relevant to viewers.

Severe weather warnings will appear in high-contrast formats designed for greater visibility and impact. Animations have also been enhanced to illustrate the progression of weather systems, such as rainfall tracking across the country or temperature trends throughout the week.

RTÉ’s weather team produces 58 forecasts each week, making it one of the broadcaster’s busiest production areas.

David Timpson, Manager of RTÉ Weather, said the upgrade will enhance the station’s ability to deliver clear and compelling weather information.

“Weather is more than temperature and rainfall — it’s about planning, protection, public trust and safety,” he said. “This new system allows us to produce clearer, more engaging content using the most reliable data from our partners at Met Éireann, while staying true to our editorial purpose.”

Gerry Murphy, Team Lead Meteorologist at Met Éireann, said the improvements will help ensure that viewers receive more accessible and understandable forecasts.

“Our collaboration with RTÉ is rooted in public service,” he said. “With this new graphics system, our data and expert analysis can be visualised more clearly than ever, helping people to prepare confidently for changing weather conditions.”
