BBC Brings Back Met Office for Weather Reports

Met Office

The BBC and the UK Met Office have announced a new long-term partnership to deliver weather forecasts and climate information to audiences across the United Kingdom.

The collaboration marks a return to direct cooperation between the national broadcaster and the country’s official meteorological service.

Since 2016, the BBC’s weather service has been supplied by MeteoGroup, a private European weather forecasting company with offices in Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and the Netherlands. The new agreement will see the Met Office resume its role as the primary weather data provider for the BBC.

Tim Davie, Director-General of the BBC, stated, “Weather is the UK’s favourite conversation and hugely important to all our lives. The BBC’s journalism will work alongside the Met Office’s weather and climate intelligence to help people make informed decisions. Trusted and impartial information is vital to understanding today’s weather.”

Penny Endersby, CEO of the Met Office, said, “We are pleased to be working again with the BBC to reach a wider audience with essential weather information. Our partnership will help people plan their days, stay safe, and remain well-informed in a changing climate.”

The collaboration will utilise the Met Office’s advanced supercomputer technology to provide more accurate and detailed forecasts across the BBC’s television, radio, and digital platforms. The phased rollout will also include initiatives on weather education and combating misinformation related to weather and climate.

Further details of the partnership and phased implementation are expected later this year. Initial joint weather content will begin to appear on BBC platforms in the coming months.
