Ulster enjoyed clear skies and bright conditions on Sunday afternoon as NASA’s Modis satellite passed over Ireland, capturing largely sunny weather across the northern half of the island.

Elsewhere, sunshine appeared hazier due to a combination of high cloud, Saharan dust drifting northwards and smoke carried from wildfires in Iberia.

Figures from Met Éireann show that sunshine amounts have been well above average nationwide over the past week, running between 108 and 164 per cent of normal levels for mid-August.

The brightest conditions were recorded in the east, where Casement Aerodrome in Co Dublin logged 56 hours of sunshine. In contrast, Knock Airport in Co Mayo registered just 36 hours, reflecting cloudier conditions in the midwest.

The week ahead will remain largely settled, with plenty of sunshine interspersed with occasional cloudier spells. Sunshine levels are again likely to finish above normal for most areas.
