The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced €6.9 million in new research funding to support 11 innovative projects focused on Ireland’s environmental and climate priorities.

Bringing the total EPA research funding for 2025 to €21.4 million, the latest awards will involve 98 researchers, students and technical staff across 27 organisations — building essential capacity in areas such as climate action, circular economy, noise pollution, and coastal resilience.

Among the topics being explored are climate awareness and actions among young people, population exposure to future sea level rise, and climate resilience of remote Irish islands.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Eimear Cotter, Director of the EPA’s Office of Evidence and Assessment, said: “The increased scale of research funding being announced by the EPA in 2025 reflects the critical role that research and innovation play in addressing climate change, environmental pollution and biodiversity decline. This new EPA funding will help develop innovative solutions to support Ireland’s response to these challenges.”

The awards are part of the EPA Research Programme, a Government of Ireland initiative funded by the Department of Climate, Energy and the Environment. The programme plays a vital role in informing national environmental policy and climate strategies, particularly in the context of Ireland’s carbon neutrality goals and extreme weather resilience.

The full list of funded projects is available on the EPA Research Database and includes detailed information on each project and host institution.
