Campaign Launched to Protect Ireland’s Natural Landscapes

Leave No Trace Ireland has launched its annual “Love This Place” campaign, urging the public to help safeguard Ireland’s cherished natural environments as the summer season begins.
Now in its fifth year, the nationwide awareness drive encourages responsible outdoor recreation and is backed by a broad coalition of partners including the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, the Office of Public Works, Coillte, Sport Ireland, Waterways Ireland, and several local authorities.
With outdoor activities such as hiking, swimming, and dog-walking continuing to surge in popularity, the campaign highlights the importance of preserving Ireland’s landscapes for future generations. Its core message is simple but powerful: “If you love this place, leave no trace.”
Nature Under Pressure
Recent figures show that over 98% of Irish residents value time spent in nature. However, this growing connection has come at a cost. Increased visitor numbers have led to more trail erosion, littering, dog fouling, wildlife disturbance, and a rising number of wildfires, with 96% of such incidents linked to human activity.
“Our message is clear,” said Maura Kiely, CEO of Leave No Trace Ireland. “We all have a part to play in preserving the places and wildlife we love. This campaign invites everyone enjoying the outdoors this summer – from seasoned hikers to first-time visitors – to take simple, mindful steps to protect nature.”
Summer Campaign Highlights
Throughout the coming months, the “Love This Place” campaign will feature:
- Digital storytelling from people across Ireland, including farmers, walkers, dog owners, and community groups.
- Local clean-up events and educational initiatives coordinated with councils and environmental organisations.
- Social media toolkits for schools, influencers, and tourism partners to amplify the message of environmental stewardship.
Actions Everyone Can Take
The campaign is built around three key actions:
- Be responsible with dogs – Keep dogs on leads near farm animals and wildlife, and always clean up after them.
- Protect wildlife and wild places – Take litter home, avoid feeding wild animals, and observe from a distance.
- Stay on marked trails – To prevent damage to sensitive habitats and avoid disturbing local fauna.
A National Effort
Speaking at the launch, Minister Dara Calleary TD, said, “Ireland’s natural heritage is one of our greatest assets – environmentally, culturally, and economically. The ‘Love This Place’ campaign reminds us that with this privilege comes responsibility. By embracing the principles of Leave No Trace, we can protect our landscapes and support the fight against biodiversity loss. Even the smallest actions make a difference.”
