Investigation into Cavan Fish Kill

river

Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) is continuing its monitoring efforts on the Mountnugent River and Captain’s Bay area of Lough Sheelin in County Cavan after detecting several hundred additional fish mortalities over the weekend.

These recent discoveries follow a fish kill event reported last week, which saw at least 68 fish die in Captain’s Bay and along a two-kilometre stretch of the Mountnugent River in County Cavan.

It is believed the additional fish died during the initial incident but had sunk to the riverbed, making them undetectable during earlier inspections. As decomposition progressed, these fish floated to the surface and were observed in the lower 400 metres of the Mountnugent River before it enters the lake.

Since the initial report, IFI officers have not observed any new fish in distress. However, they will continue to examine the affected areas in the coming days to identify any further mortalities.

The fish kill is thought to have been caused by a prolonged period of hot weather affecting water conditions in the area.
