Thunderstorm Alert in Place for Northern Counties

Thunderstorm activity is ongoing in the northwest this afternoon, with several cloud-to-ground lightning strikes recorded between Carrick-on-Shannon in Leitrim and Collooney in Sligo.

A Status Yellow thunderstorm warning has been issued for Northern Ireland, with the alert in effect from 11:00am to 8:00pm today. The warning covers counties Antrim, Armagh, Fermanagh, Tyrone, and Derry, where heavy showers and thunderstorms may lead to localised disruption, particularly to transport and outdoor activities.

Today’s warning follows a burst of thunderstorm activity that affected western parts of the country on Sunday evening and throughout Monday, bringing lightning, heavy downpours, and poor driving conditions.

The coming days will bring a mix of showers, longer spells of rain, and occasional brighter periods. While western and southwestern counties will bear the brunt of the rain initially, wet conditions are expected to spread across the country by the weekend.

Temperatures are forecast to remain in the high teens to low twenties, with light to moderate winds shifting direction as weather systems move across Ireland.
