Warm June Leads to Drop In Gas Demand

Gas Networks Ireland’s latest report shows that overall gas demand fell in June 2025, influenced largely by weather conditions.
Met Éireann described June as the fourth warmest on record, though wetter and duller than average across much of the country.
As temperatures rose, gas demand dropped by 9% compared to May and by 7% compared to June 2024. The warm weather reduced heating needs across residential, leisure, and retail sectors, which saw gas consumption fall by 21%, 17%, and 14% respectively.
Gas generated 36% of Ireland’s electricity in June, down from 40% in May. This decline reflects a rise in wind power, which increased to 30% of electricity generation in June, up from 22% in May.
Wind output showed significant daily variation, ranging from less than 1% to peaks of 75%, while gas generation fluctuated between 14% and 90%.
Periods of low wind between 9th and 14th June, and again at the end of the month, highlighted Ireland’s reliance on gas to maintain electricity supply. During these times, gas accounted for up to 58% of electricity generation.
